The sun over the Sahelian plains of Zamfara doesn’t just burn; it glitters. To a casual observer, the men digging into the parched earth with rusted pickaxes are just desperate laborers. But if you look closer at the reddish-brown stones they are pulling from the belly of the earth, you aren’t looking at mere rocks. You are looking at the future of global technology, lithium for electric car batteries, gold for central bank reserves, and tantalite for the smartphone currently in our hands.

As we stand in March 2026, Nigeria is defined by a glittering paradox. We walk on trillions of dollars worth of 44 different commercially viable minerals, yet for decades, we have been a nation gasping for foreign exchange. However, the world is currently teaching us a masterclass in strategic positioning.

With the Israel-America-Iran conflict tightening the noose on global energy and the Strait of Hormuz becoming a geopolitical choke point, nations from Ghana to South Africa are no longer looking exclusively to the Middle East for fuel, they are lining up at the gates of the Dangote Refinery in Lekki. This “scramble for Nigerian fuel” is the ultimate blueprint for our Ministry of Solid Minerals Development.

For years, Nigeria followed a tragic script: exporting raw minerals, particularly to China, and losing out on value addition, jobs, and the “hidden” wealth within the rocks. When we export a ton of raw gold ore, we aren’t just losing gold; we are giving away silver and copper for free because we lacked the refineries to separate them.

The Dangote model proves that processing power trumps raw resource ownership. If Nigeria can become the “Refiner of Last Resort” for petroleum, why are we still the “Quarry of First Resort” for raw stones? The government’s “no-processing-no-export” policy of 2026 is finally biting. We are no longer content being the world’s quarry; we want to be its factory.

Historically, over 80% of mining in Nigeria was carried out by unregulated, informal miners. Unlike the oil in the Niger Delta, which is guarded by the military, solid minerals were often a “free-for-all.”

But the landscape has shifted. The deployment of the Mining Marshals, a specialized unit of the NSCDC that has already seen over 350 arrests of illegal miners and hundreds of active court cases, is a signal that the “Wild West” era is ending. Treating a bag of smuggled gold with the same gravity as a punctured oil pipeline is the only way to ensure our mineral wealth isn’t carted away under the cover of night.

The Lithium Revolution: Nigeria’s New Oil

While we used to talk about “potential,” 2026 is the year of delivery. Nasarawa and the Kaduna-Niger border have become global lithium hubs, hosting massive domestic processing plants. We are finally keeping the value at home, producing the precursor materials for the batteries that power the world’s electric vehicles.

You cannot build a 21st-century mineral hub using a 20th-century curriculum. To replicate the Dangote success in solid minerals, the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development must enter a strategic huddle with the Ministry of Education and the National Universities Commission (NUC) to overhaul how we train our future experts. This starts with making Geology “sexy” again; it shouldn’t just be about identifying rocks under a scorching sun but should be rebranded through the NUC’s 2026 roadmap as Mineral Economics and Industrial Metallurgy.
We need “Mineral Architects” who understand the global value chain, not just field surveyors. This requires a robust Industry-Campus Pipeline where the NUC establishes Centers of Excellence in Mineral Processing within our universities, ensuring students are trained on the high-end software and machinery currently powering our new $600 million lithium plants.

To seal the deal, targeted incentives, such as scholarships funded directly by mining royalties, must be earmarked for students specializing in Value-Addition Technology. By transforming the classroom into a laboratory for industrialization, we ensure that the next generation of Nigerian geologists isn’t just looking for stones, but is refining the future of the continent.

Minerals are heavy. You cannot move iron ore effectively on a potholed road. But investors are finally betting on a fix. In the last two years, Nigeria has attracted over $2.6 billion in FDI into the sector, focused on “Mining Corridors”, strategic rail and road projects designed to move heavy materials from the hinterlands to the coast.

The “Dangote Scramble” is the Ministry’s wake-up call. Imagine a 2030 where the world is scrambling for Lithium and Cobalt, and they are coming to Nigeria, not for stones, but for high-grade battery cells.
By enforcing strict value-addition, establishing industrial processing zones in states like Kogi and Plateau, and aligning with the NUC to cultivate a new class of “Mineral Architects,” Nigeria will finally stop being a mere quarry for the world and instead become the indispensable refinery that powers the global future.

The dust under our feet is no longer just dirt, it is our new currency, the capital required to build our schools and fortify our borders. The “Dangote Scramble” has proven that the world will always beat a path to the door of the man who refines his own wealth; therefore, let the message to the world be clear: if you want our minerals, you must bring your factories, your technology, and your respect to our soil. The rocks are waiting, our students are ready, and the blueprint for our greatness is already written in the steel and steam of Lekki.

It is time to stop selling our stones and start building our destiny.
