The Special Mining Marshals of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have dismantled a major illegal mining ring operating in the Odagbo-Okaba district of Ankpa Local Government Area, Kogi State.
The operation, led by the Corps Commandant, John Onoja Attah, resulted in the arrest of 17 suspects, impounding of three trucks, and the seizure of 39 motorcycles used in the illicit operations.
A statement from the Corps said the enforcement action followed complaints from local residents over environmental degradation and public health threats allegedly linked to unregulated mining activities.
“Communities deserve good health before any form of mining activity, ” Attah said.” Part of our mandate is to enforce compliance with safety standards to prevent environmental degradation that disrupts livelihoods and endangers ecosystems.”
