Over the past 11 years, the annual Nigeria mining Week has evolved from a local gathering into West Africa’s premier platform for policy reform, investment matchmaking, and strategic dialogue in the solid minerals sector.
For decades, Nigeria’s vast wealth of over 44 commercial mineral types—including gold, coal, limestone, and critical energy transition metals like lithium—remained largely overshadowed by the oil and gas industry.
Conceived through a partnership between the Miners Association of Nigeria (MAN), PwC Nigeria, and the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, the event was created to confront deep-seated structural challenges.
These included a lack of accurate geo-scientific data, overlapping regulatory frameworks, and restricted access to international finance.
Over its 11-year journey, the conference has helped move the needle on the sector’s economic output. The mining sector’s contribution to national GDP has risen from a meager 0.3% a decade ago toward higher numbers approaching nearly 2% as regulatory transparency has improved.

Key economic milestones nurtured by discussions at the forum include:
The “No Raw Export” Mandate: Pushing for in-country beneficiation, ensuring raw minerals like lithium are locally processed rather than exported raw.
Targeted Downstream Investments: Paving the way for multi-million dollar processing plants, such as recent lithium facilities in Nasarawa State and Abuja.

Digital Cadastre Improvements: Showcasing modern online licensing and mineral mapping tools to reduce red tape for genuine investors.
Despite monumental progress, the platform continues to serve as an accountability and problem-solving arena for persistent challenges. Stakeholders use the annual gathering to address illegal mining, environmental degradation from artisanal operations, and infrastructure deficits like rail and power. Recent editions have highlighted security enforcement through specialized mining marshals to clean up criminal networks plaguing high-value mineral zones.
As it marks its eleventh year, Nigeria Mining Week remains the definitive compass guiding Nigeria’s journey toward true economic diversification.
