Guinea’s Nimba Mining seeks buyers for its fast-growing Bauxite output

By Aurel Sèdjro Houenou

Guinea’s state-owned Nimba Mining Company sets up a commercial strategy to secure buyers for its rapidly rising bauxite production, with output targeted at 10 million tons this year and 12 million tons of annual capacity from 2027.

The company plans to hold monthly tenders open to international trading companies, Reuters reported, citing Chief Executive Patrice L’Huillier. The strategy comes about a year after the Guinean government created Nimba Mining and as the company expands its operations.

L’Huillier outlined a two-part approach. Nimba Mining first plans to secure a commercial partner under an agreement that guarantees a minimum annual sales volume. Additional production would then be sold on the spot market through monthly tenders.

The approach is consistent with a strategy previously outlined by Mines Minister Bouna Sylla. Last week, Sylla told Bloomberg that Glencore had been selected through a tender to buy bauxite from Nimba Mining. Final terms of the contract are still under negotiation.

Securing Buyers for Rising Output

The commercial strategy is becoming increasingly important as Nimba Mining rapidly expands production. Earlier this month, the company said it had already produced 4.2 million tons of bauxite, including a monthly record of 1.3 million tons in July.

Nimba Mining aims to produce 10 million tons in 2026 before increasing annual capacity to 12 million tons in 2027. Securing minimum purchase commitments alongside access to the spot market could provide clearer outlets for these growing volumes.

The strategy also forms part of Guinea’s broader efforts to extract more value from its vast mineral resources. Its implementation will determine how effectively the new state-owned producer can commercialize its expanding bauxite output as it scales up operations.

Guinea is the world’s largest bauxite producer and also produces gold and iron ore, with operations at the Simandou project launched in 2025. The extractive sector accounted for 20.1% of GDP and 93.2% of the country’s exports in 2023, according to the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI).
