Segilola Resources Operating Limited (SROL), Nigeria’s first large-scale gold mining company and a subsidiary of Thor Explorations Ltd, has deepened its commitment to sustainable development with the latest phase of its Livelihood Restoration Programme (LRP), aimed at empowering host communities in Osun State.
The new phase of the LRP was officially launched on July 1, 2025, at the Iperindo Community New Town Hall, attracting community members, traditional leaders, and key stakeholders.
The initiative builds on earlier efforts by Segilola to strengthen rural economies and reduce environmental impact through sustainable agriculture and economic self-reliance.
The Livelihood Restoration Programme is a key part of SROL’s corporate social responsibility and complements paid compensation already given to project-affected persons. Since 2023, the company has invested in agricultural ventures such as fish farms and vegetable gardens across its host communities.
This new phase introduces two major agricultural projects: oil palm high-yield seedling distribution and cocoa farm rehabilitation.
As part of the cocoa initiative (Phase 2), 23 selected beneficiaries each received 400 high-yield cocoa seedlings and agrochemicals to improve cocoa farming outputs. In the first phase, seven farmers received 100 high-yield oil palm seedlings each, along with essential farming inputs.
These projects are designed to empower farmers to run profitable and sustainable farms, contributing to long-term economic growth.
“The Livelihood Restoration Programme reflects our belief that development should go beyond compensation,” said Engr. Sikiru Haruna, Senior Mining Engineer at Segilola Resources.
“It is about enabling local farmers to build stronger, more resilient futures through sustainable agricultural practices. Investing in initiatives like these lays the foundation for economic independence and environmental stewardship within our host communities.”
The event also saw the participation of Nurudeen Bello, Executive Secretary of the Osun State Office of Natural and Mineral Resources, who represented Professor Lukmon Adekunle Jimoda, Chairman of MIPREMCO, Osun State Chapter.
Bello commended the initiative and emphasized the government’s support for projects that align with inclusive and environmentally responsible growth.
Through its Livelihood Restoration Programme, Segilola Resources continues to set an example of responsible mining—a model that not only extracts value from the land but reinvests in the people who live there.
