Segilola Resources Operating Limited (SROL) has launched the 2025 SROL University Competition, inviting students across tertiary institutions in Osun to propose sustainable solutions to tackling illegal mining in Nigeria.
With the theme, “Innovative and Sustainable Solutions to Curtail Illegal Mining in Osun State and Nigeria at Large,” the competition will run from Monday, May 12 to Friday, June 6, 2025. It is open to students in universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education across the state.
Speaking at the launch, SROL Country Manager, Austin Menegbo, said the initiative is rooted in the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability, youth empowerment, and community development.
“At SROL, we believe in empowering the next generation of leaders to shape the future. This competition is more than an academic exercise, it is a platform to elevate youth voices, reward research and innovation, and turn brilliant ideas into actionable change. Illegal mining is a challenge we can solve, and we must do it together, starting now,” said Menegbo.
Participants are required to submit original research papers (between 2,000 and 5,000 words) that offer clear, real-world proposals to combat illegal mining. Each submission must include an introduction, problem statement, proposed solutions, implementation plan, conclusion, and references.
Winners of the competition will receive the following cash prizes:
₦500,000 – First Place
₦300,000 – Second Place
₦200,000 – Third Place

Independent review will be carried out by Kimpact Development Initiative (KDI), a non-governmental organisation known for youth-focused advocacy and credible evaluation practices.
