The Plateau State Government has launched another round of crackdown on illegal mining activities in the state, citing environmental damage and threats to public safety.
A recent operation by the anti-illegal mining task force resulted in the seizure of mining equipment and the issuance of stern warnings to offenders.
The joint task force visited Zawan, Rayfield Resort, Lamingo Dam, and the Yingi Reserved areas, where illegal mining has become rampant.
Recovered items included water pumps, pickaxes, and various other mining tools.
Peter Gwom, the Plateau State Commissioner for Environment, Climate Change, and Mineral Development, expressed deep concern over the widespread land degradation at the sites.
Represented by Mr. Samuel Jaryum, the Ministry’s Director of Exploration and Gemological Services, the commissioner highlighted the persistent challenges facing the state despite Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property.
“The ministry remains worried about the rising number of deaths linked to illegal mining operations, as well as the increasing population of out-of-school children in mining-prone areas within the state capital,” Jaryum stated during the operation, which was conducted in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development.
The team specifically condemned mining activities occurring inside residential areas and near the Lamingo Dam, noting the severe environmental and safety risks. They urged the public to cease these practices immediately.
