Thirty-three suspected illegal miners arrested by operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State have died in custody following what the authorities described as a suspected disease outbreak.
The Niger State Command of the NSCDC confirmed the deaths on Wednesday, September 17, 2026, saying the suspects were among those arrested during an operation conducted on September 15 and 16 in the Wushishi/Lukoto mining area of the state.
According to the Command, the 33 suspects were discovered dead in the early hours of Wednesday while in detention.
The State Commandant, in a statement confirming the incident, said preliminary indications pointed to a possible disease outbreak among the detainees, although the actual cause of the deaths had not been established.
The Command stressed that the circumstances surrounding the deaths were still being investigated and that no definitive conclusion had been reached on the cause of the fatalities.
The remains of the deceased have since been deposited at the General Hospital, Minna, where autopsies are expected to be conducted.
The autopsy, according to the Command, is intended to establish the actual cause of death and provide medical evidence that could assist investigators in determining what happened to the detainees.
The development has also prompted an immediate investigation at the highest level of the NSCDC.
The Commandant-General of the Corps has constituted a high-powered investigative panel to probe the incident and establish the circumstances that led to the deaths of the 33 suspects.
The panel is expected to examine the events leading to the arrests, the conditions under which the suspects were detained, their medical status, the nature of the suspected illness and the response of personnel to the reported outbreak.
It is also expected to determine whether there were any breaches of established procedures in the handling and detention of the suspects.
The NSCDC said the investigation would be conducted with a view to establishing the facts surrounding the incident.
The deaths occurred against the backdrop of intensified operations against illegal mining activities in Niger State and other parts of the country, as security and regulatory agencies continue to clamp down on unauthorised mining operations and related activities.
Illegal mining has remained a major concern to authorities because of its reported environmental, economic and security implications, prompting increased enforcement operations in mining communities.
However, the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the 33 suspects are expected to attract particular scrutiny, given that the victims died while in the custody of a government security agency.
The NSCDC has not indicated whether any of its personnel have been suspended or detained in connection with the incident, pending the outcome of the investigation.
Authorities are expected to release further details as the autopsy and investigation progress.
