In a decisive move to tackle the rampant illegal mining activities plaguing Cross River State,the Chairman of the Committee on Illegal Mining and Taskforce, Prince Paul Effiong, has convened a critical meeting with top security officials in the State.
The meeting, aimed to establish a collaborative framework that would bolster efforts to eradicate illegal mining and restore economic integrity to the state.
The first stop on Effiong’s agenda was the office of the State Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mrs. Roseline Izuagbe.
During their meeting, Effiong and his team detailed their operational strategies and outlined specific areas where security support would be indispensable. The DSS Director responded positively, assuring the state government of her agency’s commitment to collaborating with the taskforce. “Together, we will work tirelessly to stop illegal mining in Cross River State, driving the economic prosperity that the Governor has envisioned for our people,” Izuagbe stated.
Following the engagement with the DSS, Effiong’s team proceeded to the office of the State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Mr Charles Brown. In this meeting, the Chairman reiterated the importance of coordinated efforts between the taskforce and the civil defense corps. Commandant Mr Charles assured Effiong of a strong partnership, asserting, “We will work with the taskforce to make the state unsafe for illegal miners.”
This sentiment highlights the commitment of security agencies to align their resources and manpower with the objectives of the taskforce.
The final leg of the visit took the team to the State Police Commissioner, Mr. Gyogon Augustine Grimah. In a frank dialogue, the Chairman called for enhanced security measures that would facilitate the taskforce’s operations.
By reinforcing police presence in hotspots known for illegal mining activities, the Chairman underscored the need for a unified approach in addressing this pressing issue. “My visit here is to solidify our relationship and ensure that we can pool our resources effectively,” Effiong remarked during the meeting.
In response, Commissioner Grimah expressed appreciation for Effiong’s initiative, pledging the full commitment of the police toward combating illegal mining. He stated, “We are dedicated to ensuring a robust police presence and fostering a strong working relationship with all stakeholders in this fight.”
His commitment underscores the seriousness with which the law enforcement community is approaching the issue of illegal mining, which has long been a source of environmental degradation and economic loss for the state.
Accompanying the Chairman on these significant visits were the Director of Special Mines Surveillance Taskforce on Illegal Mining, members of the taskforce committee, and press representatives. Their collective efforts aim to bring about a comprehensive strategy that not only addresses illegal mining but also paves the way for sustainable economic development in Cross River State.
As the taskforce prepares to implement its plans, the collaboration between government bodies and security agencies serves as a hopeful signal for bringing an end to illegal mining practices that have long plagued the region.
