The Nigerian Institute of Mining and Geosciences (NIMG), has reiterated its dedication to advancing mining operations in Nigeria through the delivery of cutting-edge technology and skilled professionals.
In an interview with Voice of Nigeria, NIMG Director General, Professor Suleiman Hassan, emphasised the institute’s diverse training programs, including courses on precious stone identification, gem cutting and polishing, mine instrumentation, and mining law.
He noted that these programs offer valuable, hands-on training that prepares professionals for various roles in the mining sector.
“The training programs also include a six-month research component, where students utilize state-of-the-art equipment to conduct research. NIMG boasts modern labs with equipment that surpasses what is found in many institutions worldwide,” Professor Hassan explained.
The Director General highlighted the institute’s role in producing qualified professionals in Mining Engineering, Minerals Processing, and Minerals Exploration.
He pointed out that these graduates are instrumental in reducing Nigeria’s reliance on foreign mining experts and equipment.
Professor Hassan further said NIMG also offers an 18-month Postgraduate Diploma program in mining engineering, minerals exploration, and processing. This comprehensive program includes classroom lectures, field trips, and rigorous lab work, with a focus on producing well-rounded professionals ready to support Nigeria’s growing mining industry.
“Graduates from our program are already making significant contributions to the sector, with some working in government ministries and others driving initiatives in mining,” said Professor Hassan.
The DG also acknowledged the vast mineral deposits across Nigeria, noting that every State and local government is rich in valuable minerals, including precious stones.
“The mineral deposits in this country are vast, unlike petroleum. We have information that petroleum can finish one day but these minerals can never be finished because it is as a result of weather formation,” he noted.
He commended the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake for implementing reforms that have enhanced the sector’s attractiveness, particularly the establishment of the Mineral Corporation of Nigeria and efforts to formalise artisanal mining.
“The Seven Points Agenda is a very good agenda ranging from the establishment of the Mineral corporation of Nigeria to the formalization of artisanal miners to join the artisanal corporative is a laudable initiative,” Hassan said.
Established by the Nigerian government, NIMG serves as an international center of excellence in Mining and Geosciences, training professionals who will shape the future of Nigeria’s mining industry.
