The unabated and uncontrollable activities of artisanal miners on the land of the University of Ilesa, Osun State needs urgent government attention to ensure that the university is not pushed into extinction.

This was the sum of a recent warning by the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Taiwo Asaolu.

Speaking at the annual Community Engagement on Mining in Ijesaland by the Ijesaland Mineral Resources Development Forum (IMRDF) last Thursday at Ilesa Social Elite Club House, Prof Asaolu, who was represented by Dr. Posi Aduroja , said, “The university’s expansion is becoming very difficult and if steps are not taken the continuous existence of the University may be threatened.

“Now we are at the point of becoming afraid as the security agents could not do anything to stop them as they are incapacitated.

“Our plea is that they should leave the environment completely.

“The lives of our students in their hostels are being threatened, as at now, to erect new buildings at the staff quarters is becoming very difficult because most of the land are already being devastated.

“Do anything to assist us, this security people cannot do anything anymore as this miners come in the night with sophisticated weapons”.
